Why is Travel Insurance important for New Zealand?
Comprehensive cover is a vital component of the New Zealand adventure of your dreams.
Some top reasons to get travel insurance for your trip to New Zealand are:
- Medical expenses: Australia has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with New Zealand, but it has many limitations. For example, it doesn’t cover care from a GP or other primary care, the full cost of medicines a GP prescribes, or ambulance travel. To ensure you can explore with confidence, you need travel insurance for your medical expenses.
- Travel disruptions: All kinds of incidents can cause disruptions to your travels. From travel delays to lost luggage, we offer cover for these potentially expensive occurrences.
- Natural disasters: New Zealand is prone to natural disasters, which may impact or even cancel your trip. AllClear Travel Insurance offers cover for trip cancellation resulting from natural disasters, where your holiday provider does not offer an alternative.
- Adventure activities: New Zealand is one of the world's top adventure destinations. With AllClear Travel Insurance, medical expenses resulting from these activities can be covered. We can also provide further cover for activities like skiing, including for the cost of lost, stolen or damaged equipment.
This is general advice only. Please read our Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to make sure this cover is right for you.

Do Australians need Travel Insurance in New Zealand?
Australia and New Zealand have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement. Some emergency overseas medical costs can be covered under this agreement.
However, the agreement does have limitations. To enjoy complete peace of mind when it comes to medical expenses on your trip, travel insurance is still a great help.
Travel insurance can also help cover other costs that may arise on your New Zealand holiday. For example, AllClear's comprehensive Travel Insurance can cover rental vehicle insurance excess, lost or stolen belongings and more.
While the risks of financial hardship for Australian citizens in New Zealand aren't quite as great as in other countries, travel insurance is still an important addition for your trip.
